Evacuation: when to leave and what to carry

Leave only when told to, or when there is clear danger. Know two routes.

Guide · 1 min read

Most emergencies end with people staying home safely. Leave when authorities instruct you, or when you see immediate danger such as rising flood water, fire, structural damage or a gas smell.

It is happening now

In Sakeena you can tick each step and see your progress. It stays on your device. Open it as a checklist

Do now

  • Decide where you would go: relatives or friends outside the affected area, or an official shelter. Agree it with your family.
  • Learn two routes. Keep the car fuel above half.
  • Pack one grab-and-go bag per two or three people.

Do within 15 minutes

  • If you are told to leave, switch off main electricity, gas and water if it is safe and you were taught how.
  • Take the bag, medicines, phones, chargers, documents, pets in carriers and water.
  • Tell your contact person where you are going.

Do in the first day

  • Never drive or walk through flooded roads or wadis. Even shallow moving water can carry a car away. Turn around and find another route.
  • Follow police and civil defence directions at checkpoints.

Do daily

  • Rehearse leaving the house twice a year, including at night.
  • Do not return until authorities say the area is safe.
