Food and rations without electricity or cooking

Shelf-stable, no-cook food that suits your family and your fridge time limit.

Guide · 1 min read

Plan food you can eat cold, that needs no water to prepare and that your family already likes. Dates, canned beans and fish, nut butter, crackers and shelf-stable milk cover most needs. Choose halal-labelled products and rotate stock once a year.

In Sakeena you can tick each step and see your progress. It stays on your device. Open it as a checklist

Do now

  • Build a no-cook shelf: dates, canned beans and fish, nut butter, crackers, dried fruit, nuts, long-life milk.
  • Buy a manual can opener and keep it with the food.
  • Build your supplies gradually, a few items each shopping trip. Buying everything at once is costly and empties shelves for others.
  • Add infant formula or baby food and any special diets (diabetic, allergy, texture-modified).

Do within 15 minutes

  • Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. A closed fridge stays cold for only a few hours.
  • Move the most perishable items (cooked food, dairy, meat) together and eat them first.

Do in the first day

  • Eat fridge food first, then freezer food, then shelf food.
  • Throw away anything that smells, looks wrong or has been warm for more than a few hours. When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Never use charcoal, gas stoves or generators indoors. Carbon monoxide is invisible and deadly.

Do daily

  • Plan meals and snacks so children and elders eat regularly, and keep dates and water ready for iftar if fasting.
  • Check cans for swelling or rust and replace stock once a year.
