Toilet and hygiene without water pressure

Bucket toilet, odour control, a handwashing station and water for wudu.

Guide · 1 min read

Toilets are the part families forget. A simple bucket toilet with bags and absorbent gel keeps a home clean and safe for days. Plan about five uses per person per day.

It is happening now

In Sakeena you can tick each step and see your progress. It stays on your device. Open it as a checklist

Do now

  • Set up a sturdy bucket with a tight lid, or a toilet seat that fits a bucket. Keep a second lidded bin for sealed waste.
  • Stock waste bags, absorbent gel or powder sachets, odour-proof outer bags, gloves, wipes, soap and disinfectant.
  • Set aside a dedicated jug of water for wudu, and agree who refills it. Many scholars allow tayammum when water is scarce; ask a trusted scholar.

Do within 15 minutes

  • If water stops, use the bucket toilet. Pour-flushing a normal toilet with a bucket of washing water works only if drains are clear. Do not flush during floods or sewage backup.
  • Place the bucket in a ventilated room or bathroom with a closed door for privacy.

Do in the first day

  • After each use add gel or powder, close the bag, tie it, then double-bag it.
  • Store sealed bags in the lidded bin in a shaded outdoor spot, away from food and out of direct sun.
  • Handwashing station: a container with a tap or a bottle with a small hole, soap and a basin to catch water. Wash after the toilet and before eating. Hand sanitiser is a backup, not a replacement for visible dirt.

Do daily

  • Empty and tie the bag at least once a day. Clean the seat and handles with disinfectant.
  • Babies: use diapers, change often and dispose of them in sealed bags.
  • Ask the municipality or your landlord how to dispose of sealed waste when collection resumes.
